Landscape architecture students were invited to the annual student/professionals mixer, providing an excellent networking opportunity for UNM students. The 2014 NMASLA Individual Awards were announced at the event this year.

Elizabeth Reardon was presented with the 2014 Professional Distinction Award for her exemplary examples of professional achievement for the advancement of the landscape architecture profession.

NMASLA enjoyed another exciting year of educational events and networking opportunities. They continued the tradition of Quarterly Events, offering continuing education credits and a chance to catch up with all outstanding members of the local landscape architecture community. They continued to advocate for issues important to landscape architects, collaborate with University of New Mexico students, and work with local communities to promote the profession.

On February 11th, NMASLA traveled to the Roundhouse in Santa Fe to celebrate New Mexico Complete Streets Day with Senator McSorley and the NM Complete Streets Leadership Team. This event was intended to pave the way for future legislation on the effort to improve the health and safety of New Mexicans, with a goal of increasing active transportation options through "complete streets" policies, practices, design standards and guidelines.

The first Quarterly Event (Q1), in April, was a multi-modal extravaganza. Attendees spent the morning listening to presentations on the challenges and benefits of expanding transportation systems to give equal consideration to all modes of travel. Review of local planning projects, including streetscape renovations and University of New Mexico student design work, gave NMASLA members inspiration to continue to move these ideas forward. They spent the afternoon on a whirlwind tour of Albuquerque that included walking, biking, bussing, and riding the Railrunner train. This firsthand experience with local transportation networks gave insight into ways to make alternative transportation more convenient, safe, and fun.

In May, NMASLA made their annual trip to Washington DC for Advocacy Day, where they had the chance to talk with elected officials about the importance of landscape architecture and how it improves quality of life in local communities. They are constantly working on advocacy efforts to further public understanding of the profession as well as initiatives that create jobs and other opportunities for landscape architects.

For the second Quarterly Event (Q2), in June, members traveled to Santa Fe to visit the Academy for the Love of Learning, where the landscape design has evolved in line with the philosophy of the school over the past several years. They toured the campus and reviewed water harvesting and recycling systems, native plant design, and landform grading. The second tour stop was the newly constructed first phase of the Santa Fe Botanic Gardens, where NMASLA learned about the plants showcased at the gardens and the plans for future expansion.

In August NMASLA held their annual Golf Tournament and had record attendance. While some golf tournaments feature tough competition, theirs is all about fun and even has a team costume contest! After mingling with vendors at the vendor expo and lunch, folks hit the green for an afternoon of golfing and landscape architectural merriment.

September brought the start of a new school year, and NMASLA joined the UNM Students for the annual Student/Professional Mixer. This year they announced the 2014 NMASLA Individual Awards at the mixer. Finally, NMASLA is gearing up for the fourth Quarterly Event (Q4), the Innovative Stormwater Infrastructure Conference, which includes a "Green Streets Bootcamp" training workshop in the morning and a series of exciting presentations in the afternoon. Presenters include ASLA National President Mark Focht, the New Mexico Watershed Resources Network, and AMAFCA.
