Course Description


So your client saw a picture of a vanishing edge pool in a magazine"?(R)?and wants you to design or build something similar"?(R)?what complexities you should understand?

Designing water features requires the integration of art, design, and technology.

This presentation reviews basic water feature design concepts, elements all water features incorporate. It will explore some elements to add interest to your water features, such as: waterfalls and weirs, water veils/walls, water sculptures, fire and water, and natural water features. Yvonne will review more complex water feature effects, such as: edge pools (infinity/vanishing/negative), overflow pools (perimeter/slot); that are hydraulically and structurally more complex to design and build. No presentation on the subject of water features is complete without discussing some common mistakes that designers and pools builders should avoid.

Biography
Yvonne English, registered landscape architect, landscape contractor, and LEED AP, is the founding principle of Legends Design Studio. Her multiple roles grant her hands-on experience in all facets of landscape design project development, including preliminary design, site planning, planting, irrigation, lighting and water feature design, construction drawings and specifications, construction support and LEED-sensitive design.

Yvonne learned about pond design from Gary Wittstock, one of the founders of Aquascapes. As owner of her construction company, Legends in Landscape, she designed and installed her first water feature in 1996. This pond was a star feature in the 1997 Parade of Ponds. After moving to California, she accelerated her skills as a pool designer with Genesis3, graduating from their Pool Design Schools I and II. She is design instructor at UCLA Extension's Landscape Architecture Program. Yvonne started her professional career as a software engineer. Engineering has a powerful influence on her design final solutions. She imagines how to light a space, and then performs the multiple calculations required to make the system perform as designed.
