Course Description:

Lighting requires the unique design skill of manipulating the eye through dark and light spaces and providing night compositions. This seminar provides the basics of landscape lighting from a designer's point of view. The course highlights core concepts of aesthetics of composition with regards to safety, pedestrian circulation and security for the home. Understanding how the eye functions as light levels change is key to a successful lighting design. Techniques to create several lighting effects will be explained, including techniques to minimize effects to the dark sky. The process of lighting design from defining the lighting program and site inventory to conceptual design and design documentation will be reviewed, as well as common lighting mistakes.

Biography:

Yvonne English, registered landscape architect, licensed landscape contractor and LEED AP, is the founding principal of the landscape architecture firm, Legends Design Studio, Inc. Since 1994, Yvonne has designed and built residential landscapes in both the Midwest and California. Her residential designs range from intimate spaces and outdoor rooms to dramatic vanishing edge pools and spas. She loves to provide a nighttime dimension to her landscape creations with a dark sky friendly lighting plan. Yvonne believes to protect our environment; every design should incorporate sustainable design principles, like utilizing more drought tolerant landscapes and low-volume irrigation systems. Yvonne was originally a software engineer who changed careers to landscape design. She has a Landscape Design Certificate from Saddleback College and received a Profession Landscape Architecture Certificate from the UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture Program. Teaching is another passion for Yvonne. She teaches Landscape Design and Residential Landscape Lighting for UCLA Extension?EUR??,,????'?????<
