The Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) has launched a survey to determine the feasibility of professional credentialing and project certification. SITES is working with the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), which manages the certification and credentialing programs for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating Systems. The chapter is taking the next step in hosting LARE sessions. Budget discussions and training sessions for instructors are being planned. Penn Park, a new $46-million 24-acre park designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) on the eastern edge of the University of Pennsylvania campus, manages to create a coherent space out of a mess of transportation infrastructure. The main goal of the park, which used to be a giant parking lot for mail trucks, is to provide a mix of park and sports facilities for the university. A group of 46 early risers from the Eastern and Central Sections headed north to the Big Apple to visit three recent park projects ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) the High Line, Chelsea Cove and the 9/11 Memorial. Landscape architects from James Corner Field Operations, Michael van Valkenburgh Associates and Peter Walker Partners met members at their respective project to give us the dirt on how the parks came to be. Each of the Landscape Architects was directly involved with the design and/or construction phase, and enjoyed answering questions.

Ann Marchino and Gwen Johnson were the event co-coordinators. Landscape Architects from James Corner Field Operations, Michael van Valkenburgh Associates and Peter Walker Partners (PWP) met the chapter members at their respective project to give the members the low down. Here, Matt Donham of PWP at the 9/11 Memorial brushes aside some gravel to reveal the structure behind the illusion of a conventional tree pit perched 14 inches above the root ballroot on Pier 62.
