Iowa ASLA Chapter

Michael Gaunt, ASLA , Chapter President

The Iowa chapter participated in the Nationwide 8/17 campaign by incorporating a grass-roots approach to spreading awareness of the profession. Notable projects designed by landscape architects were tagged with sidewalk chalk around downtown Des Moines at Iowa State Fairgrounds.

The chapter has been updating their goals and planning events to engage and support their membership. A full update to the chapter website has just been completed to help provide additional information and links for their members to stay current with chapter events and news. In addition to the website updates, a strategic planning retreat was held in the spring of 2011 to update the previous strategic plan of 2001.

Proposed goals from this event included increasing visibility and public awareness, enhancing member services, updating and advancing a legislative agenda, and activating its membership through volunteer projects and leadership mentoring.

Also in the spring, ASLA Iowa sponsored the 6th annual ASLA Central States Conference at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines. ASLA Central States is made up of the Great Plains, Prairie Gateway, St. Louis, Oklahoma and Iowa chapters of ASLA. The conference rotates between chapters each year.
