Course Title: Palms in Sustainable Landscapes

Biography:

Reuben Ellis is Vice President of Ellis Farms, a wholesale nursery located in San Diego County that specializes in palms. He has worked in farming and the nursery industry since 1978. He is also an adjunct graduate faculty member at Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona, where he teaches cultural studies focusing on the American Southwest.

Course Title: Palms in Sustainable Landscapes

Course Description: As the landscape professionals have increasingly recognized the importance of sustainable, environmentally friendly design, there is much to learn about the appropriate use of specific plants. This seminar offers a grower-based perspective on the use of palms in sustainable, environmentally responsible landscapes. Emphasizing a site-focused approach to the use of palms, topics to be discussed include: low water use palms, climate appropriate use of palms, palm biomass, palms in edible landscapes, non-invasive palms, palm maintenance as sustainability, palms and intangible human values. A call will also be made for further study of palms in the context of Urban Forest Effects.
