Colorado ASLA Chapter
The Colorado ASLA Chapter was founded in 1973. The charitable arm of the chapter is the JSR Foundation, a nonprofit named for Jane Silverstein Ries, FASLA and dedicated to the sustainability and stewardship of natural and designed landscapes in the Rocky Mountain region. Jane Silverstein Ries was the first woman to pursue a career in landscape architecture in Colorado and held the third landscape architecture license in the state. Her career in landscape architecture spanned nearly six decades. Ian Anderson, ASLA, the 2010 chapter president, notes the chapter has been active in planning the design tracks for the 2011 ProGreen Expo (Feb. 8-11), and recognized in particular the efforts of Robby Layton, Kurt Munding and Jill Wuertz to increase the level of planning and design presentations for the Expo to include urban agriculture, historic landscapes, living walls, community health and urban water systems.

The first phase involves municipal outreach letter to explain the Landscape Architecture Act and compiling talking points and sample ordinances from municipalities that have taken a lead in complying with the act, such as Pueblo, Colo. The committee intends to begin meeting with the larger municipalities to encourage them to comply with the law. Remaining phases will involve outreach to allied professions, self-enforcement, possibly monitoring insurance claims and preparing necessary records for the sunset review of the licensure act in 2017. Discussions with legislators and others during the 2010 legislative session underscored the importance of proactively approaching the sunset review as early as possible.
The Executive Committee closed the chapter?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s Political Action Committee due to a lack of funds and the ongoing reporting requirements. It was also decided to invite representatives from the Department of Regulatory Agencies Board of Landscape Architects to future Executive Committee meetings to build an ongoing relationship and establish solid lines of communication between the members of the profession and our state regulators.
ASLA Colorado meets regularly with the GreenCo Legislative Committee (and their lobbyists) to keep apprised of ongoing and upcoming issues of legislative and regulatory importance.
The Colorado ASLA Chapter had three members join the ranks the ASLA Council of Fellows this year.
