Course Title: Design Outdoor Lighting for the Dark Sky

Biography:

Lara Jacobson Cordell, has studied both interior and lighting design. She is Lighting Certified, LC, by the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions. The NCQLP has established a certification process by which practitioners in lighting and related fields, through testing,demonstrate their knowledge and experience across the lighting professions. Lara is also a LEED AP, certifying her for green building knowledge.

Lighting is not new to Lara. She has worked as a lighting designer for the Lighting Design Alliance in Long Beach, Lighting Research Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Pivotal Lighting, Affiliated Engineers, Inc. in Madison, Wisconsin. More recently she founded a start-up lighting manufacturing company, LITE360, specializing in specializing in spec grade, solution-driven, IP67 luminaires. Now Lara is traveling the country as a National Account Executive for Wiedenbach-Brown Co., Inc.

Yvonne English








Biography:

Yvonne English, registered landscape architect, landscape contractor, and LEED AP, is the founding principle of Legends Design Studio. Her multiple roles grant her hands-on experience in all facets of landscape design project development, including preliminary design, site planning, planting, irrigation, lighting and water feature design, construction drawings and specifications, construction support and LEED-sensitive design.

In 1995, Yvonne began training as a lighting designer with Bill Locklin, the inventor of landscape lighting & founder of Nightscaping. Her abilities expanded as she attended several workshops presented by Janet Moyer, the renowned expert of landscape lighting. Yvonne never forgot the knowledge gained from Janet's wisdom and attended Janet's 5-day professional Landscape Lighting Institute in New York. Legends in Landscape has designed and installed lighting systems for the past 14 years.

Yvonne started her professional career as a software engineer. Engineering has a powerful influence on her design final solutions. She imagines how to light a space, and then performs the multiple calculations required to make the system perform as designed.

Course Title: Design Outdoor Lighting for the Dark Sky

Course Description: Specified periods of light and dark, known as circadian rhythms, are essential for good health for life on Earth, including humans. Light pollution is any adverse effect of artificial light, including sky glow, glare, light trespass, light clutter, decreased visibility at night, and energy waste. Landscape Architect, Yvonne English, and Lighting Designer, Lara Cordell will describe Dark Sky. They will provide an outdoor lighting design overview, then present design considerations to minimize light pollution and preserve more of our night sky. Finally, the speakers will discuss the USGBC requirements for LEED credit compliance.
