Course Title: Composting Workshop
Course Description: Workshop instructors will promote the benefits of compost and provide practical tools and information on how to use compost effectively for landscape and environmental enhancement, including the new Caltrans Compost-Use Specifications and the US Composting Council?EUR??,,??s Seal of Testing Assurance program. Participants will also receive instructive manuals on ?EUR??,,??Compost Use for Landscape and Environmental Enhancement?EUR??,,?? by Dr. David Crohn & Janet Hartin and ?EUR??,,??Using Compost Specifications for California Municipalities and Landscape Professionals?EUR??,,?? by R. Alexander Associates Inc.
Biography:Dr. David Crohn
Dr. Crohn earned his doctorate in 1992 from Cornell University in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. Since then he has been a professor and Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. His research emphasizes the beneficial use of municipal and agricultural residues as soil amendments and fertilizers. If used beneficially, these materials can improve soils, crops and landscapes, but appropriate use requires consideration of their potential impact on ground and surface waters. By applying a systems approach, Dr. Crohn has developed tools to assist farmers is scheduling applications of manures and other organic fertilizers. He works closely with the compost industry and state agencies, assisting them in identifying quality products for use in the landscape to promote plants health and in construction areas to control erosion.
Recently, he has published novel approaches for determining environmental pathogen survival functions where temperatures vary over time and where occurrences represent extreme events that are seldom observable. He is also involved in continuing efforts to coordinate management of two competing risks: food safety and water quality.
Biography:Dan Noble
Mr. Dan Noble, is a Partner of Inquiry International (www.InquiryInternational.com), an executive coaching and sustainable development consulting firm, based in Southern California. He is also Executive Director of the Association of Compost Producers (ACP) (www.healthysoil.org) and has over 20 years of environmental market research, publishing and strategic consulting experience. He works with water and sanitation agencies and private organics recycling companies to expand integrated, economies of scope, investments, in sustainable water, organics and bioenergy management at the local to international levels. Mr. Noble has B.A. degrees in Biology and Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego and M.S. degrees in Molecular Biology and Education from the University of Oregon.
William Baker is a Certified Golf Course Superintendent and a Certified Arborist. He is a California licensed pest control advisor and he holds a pesticide applicators license. He received his Bachelors Degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Redlands. He is the consultant for Green Industry Programs, and a course instructor, at University of California Extension at Riverside. He has written over 60 articles on trees and turf. He has managed two golf courses that were listed in the Golf Digest "Top 100" in America. He has been host superintendent for nine nationally televised events, including the Bob Hope Desert Classic, the Los Angeles Open, and the PGA Championship. He is the past president of three separate Golf Course Superintendents Associations and the Southern California Turfgrass Council.
