The Lorain County, Ohio Metroparks approached local landscapers to help them in the construction of a children?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s garden. A meeting was held to explain how they needed assistance in making the garden a reality. After some discussion, Lifestyle Landscaping, Inc. committed to the project as we felt the long-term benefit to the community far outweighed any short-term burden for us.
The garden was built at the Schoepfle Arboretum, formerly a private garden that was donated to the Metroparks in 1969.
The master plan for the children?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s garden was based on a musical theme. Each participating landscape company volunteered to design and install individual portions of the larger garden. Each of these smaller areas had more specific musical connotations and names that would appeal to kids such as a piano maze, a sensory cymbal garden and a woodwinds garden. Children can explore each individual garden and easily move on to the next, as they are all abutting and connected with pavement.
To construct the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Pause?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? Garden, which was a 30?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????X 50?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'???? area; Lifestyle Landscaping designed the space to be a restful and quiet area complete with a bubbling rock water feature. The intent was for kids and adults to be able to walk into our garden and take a break from the more active portions of the park. We used a combination of techniques and materials to achieve a quiet, naturalistic setting.
First, we used the pause symbol for the shape of the garden walkway. Stamped and dyed concrete was used to build the walk because of its durability and low maintenance. A dark grey color was chosen to resemble a note on a page of music and was textured for safe footing. The straight walkway leads to circular area that circumvents a bubbling stone water feature. Large seating stones were positioned around the feature for enjoyable viewing. All the stones in the garden were set prior to pouring concrete. This trick gives the perception that the stones had always been there and the garden was built around them.
Second, incorporating a water feature seemed almost a no-brainer. The sight and sound of water is like a kid magnet and is the focal point of the garden. We built the feature to be interactive and ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????touchable?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????. Little hands can touch and splash in the feature while standing on sure pavement. The water also is a natural invitation for songbirds to visit, which only adds to the visitor?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s experience.
Over 200 perennials were used in large drifts on the ground layer by Willoway Wholesale Nurseries and with consistent use of myrtle throughout the garden visually tied it together.
The willingness of some of our suppliers to assist us in our effort speaks volumes of their character, community focus and caring attitude.
A mainly volunteer staff at the arboretum performs the maintenance for the entire Children?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s Garden. We tried to keep that in mind throughout the design and installation process so, in the end, our project would be a lasting contribution to the kids of our area.
