It is very likely that you didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t pursue a career in grounds management to get rich, but rather because you love doing it.
However, the career field you originally entered is changing drastically into an executive level profession. It is safe to say, those who will be able to adapt to this shifting landscape ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) pardon the pun ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) will be those who ascend to the highest peaks of the profession. While these changes present challenges they also present an opportunity to demonstrate the value of your experience and knowledge to your organization.
Traditionally, grounds managers had primarily been associated with such tasks as mowing, fertilizing, aerating, weeding and pruning. While these are still principal components among their scope of responsibilities, many professionals?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? roles have evolved. Today?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s grounds manager is not only critical in shaping an organization?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s image and its physical spaces, but can also serve a crucial role when it comes to the organization?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s bottom line.
Just think about it for a minute. How often has your facility undergone renovation or new construction in which you have had to go back and correct incompatible or poorly designed landscape elements? The root of the problem is that contractors and landscape architects know plants, but in most cases are not familiar with plant maintenance and the associated costs.
This is where grounds management professionals can really prove and enhance their value to an organization. With growing pressure to control costs, organizations simply can?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t afford to spend resources fixing problems that could have been avoided by involving their grounds manager in the landscape planning process.
However, in order for your input to be sought, you have to establish your credentials and expertise. Grounds management professionals that stand out in today?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s business environment are those who have taken advantage of training, education, and certification opportunities on a range of issues such as sustainability, plant selection, water conservation, landscape design, project development and staff development. Is this you or do you have some catching up to do?
For those of you looking to broaden your involvement in planning processes, it is important to demonstrate your value to the process by clearly identifying trouble spots in landscape designs or existing landscapes. Pictures can be helpful. Quantifying the problem by illustrating the costs to maintain that trouble spot can be convincing. For instance, a landscape designer may want trees close to a building. Showing them photos of exactly how much space a mature tree requires might change their minds fairly quickly. Adding up the costs of pruning associated with their close proximity to the building would seal the deal.
Throw in the new push for sustainability and it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a brave new world for grounds managers. Are you prepared? Whether your answer is yes or no, the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) is a great resource to keep abreast of the latest issues, technologies, and practices affecting the profession. One such resource is the upcoming 2008 PGMS School of Grounds Management & GIE+EXPO. Taking place October 22nd to 25th in Louisville, Kentucky this program features a multidisciplinary curriculum tailored to the breadth of knowledge the ground management profession requires.
