As a grounds professional, of course you know I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?m joking. Sustainability is a buzzword across all industries, but it is becoming a central theme in all aspects of the grounds management profession. Unfortunately, the term is often thrown around without any rhyme or reason.
Up until recently, much of the focus on sustainability has been on design and construction of such landscapes by disciplines and individuals devoid of any background in maintaining such landscapes.
This points to the overlooked key cog in sustainability – maintenance. After all, once the building or landscape has been constructed, it is now in the hands of grounds maintenance professionals who must truly sustain these sites. This means we are not only grounds managers but also sustainability managers. With this in mind, PGMS is leading the way for the grounds management profession, becoming a stakeholder group in the Sustainable Site Initiative (SSI).
Originally initiated as a joint venture of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the United States Botanic Garden the SSI is an effort underway to develop standards and guidelines for site development that will reduce the environmental impact of landscapes. While standards exist for sustainable structures ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oe ?EUR??,,????'?????<?green buildings?EUR??,,????'?????<? ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oe there are no standards to guide those who want to create and maintain sustainable landscapes as there are for green buildings. The initiative will analyze, consolidate and advance the research needed to establish sound metrics and create regional guidelines and incentives for designing, implementing and maintaining sustainable sites. PGMS members will have exclusive input on the Initiative through PGMS board member Joe Jackson, CGM, who will serve on the SSI?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s advisory panel as it establishes these standards as well as access to these guidelines as they are finalized. If you aren?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t yet a PGMS member, there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s never been a better time to join or pitch it to your supervisors ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) your organization is at a competitive disadvantage without it.
While talking about PGMS?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? push to be on the forefront of sustainability in grounds maintenance, I would be remiss not to mention the Society?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s educational efforts. Beginning with our School of Grounds Management this past fall and our latest Regional Grounds Management Seminar in Dallas, we have had a growing emphasis on sustainability. This coming year?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s School in Louisville, Ky. will have a theme based around the topic with tentative topics including: the latest updates from the Sustainable Sites Initiative; management and maintenance of green roofs; managing sustainable sites; and sustainable maintenance of shrubs and perennials. My thanks go out to Education Chair Monica Higgins, CGM for putting together a dynamic, cutting-edge education program.
This is just a start of new services that PGMS will be offering to members in the coming months to help establish them as an invaluable source of knowledge within their organization. As part of this effort PGMS?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? Board of Directors recently met with an outside branding firm to better identify our target audience and their needs. Many great ideas came out of this meeting and many are already in the works. For instance we are working with Landscape Superintendent and Maintenance Professional magazine on creating a revamped, more representative Grounds Management Salary Survey. PGMS.org will soon be getting a facelift. In the meantime, I encourage you to do your part in advancing the grounds management profession as a member of PGMS.
PGMS will be coming to Washington, DC on July 17-18 as part of our 2008 Regional Grounds Management Seminars & Site Visitations Series. This is a great chance to enjoy a family vacation in the nation?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s capitol, while also taking advantage of the tremendous opportunity to get your career on the right track.
