I hope you and your loved ones have truly enjoyed the spirit of the holiday season. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s the time of the year when we give thanks for nature?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s abundant blessing that we are entrusted to care for. This time of year is a great moment to take stock of what?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s important in our lives: a supportive family, enduring friendships, the professionalism of peers and crewmates, and the beauty that surrounds us every day.
Now is also the time to look towards what lies ahead in 2008 and how we can continue our individual development. How can we be better neighbors, co-workers, friends, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters? As most of you share the same passion as I towards my career in grounds management, now is the time for introspection when it comes to the work site as well. Being a professional means striving for perfection, knowing that this is impossible. We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re always looking at what we can do better, how we can complete tasks quicker and more cost effectively, and how we can make the people around us even better.
As we look forward and evaluate where we need to improve, let me ask you one question. Where does PGMS, the only organization solely dedicated to your profession, come up on your list? If you?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re already a member, how can you take better advantage of the resources the Society provides? Is 2008 the year you devote to attaining the status of Certified Grounds Manager (CGM)? Is it the year you serve on your local branch board or spearhead an effort to form a branch in your area?
If you haven?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t yet joined, you owe it to your individual professional development and to the profession, to do so. PGMS is a wonderful organization, but I see a lot more potential for growth ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) if EVERYONE starts pulling a bit of the load. PGMS is always working to advance grounds management as a profession, but just as a rowboat in which only a few are rowing, elevating the profession takes a lot longer when only a few are members. I can?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t even imagine the possibilities if everyone in our profession would make the commitment of becoming a member of the Society.
With that said we do have several exciting developments for the coming year.
We are working on revamping the School of Grounds Management?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s education offerings towards a more structured format, in turn making the program easier to pitch to your organization?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s purse holders and making attendance in the program more attractive to employers when they make hiring or advancement decisions.
Additionally, PGMS continues to explore new territory through its Regional Grounds Management Seminars & Site Visitation series as it visits Dallas on March 7-8. This is a great opportunity to support the continued growth of the Texas Branch of PGMS and expose grounds professionals in the Lone Star State to our first-rate educational offerings.
Here?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s hoping that everyone had a happy holiday season and wishing everyone a productive new year!
The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) will be coming to Dallas, Texas on March 7-8 for the first stop in the 2008 PGMS Regional Grounds Management Seminars & Site Visitations series.
This program is designed to provide grounds managers with the hard-to-find opportunity to gain knowledge, ask questions, and network with others about challenges and issues specific to their profession.
This interactive program will feature education seminars on critical and timely topics such as maintaining landscapes designed for LEED Certification, safely managing a tree crew, a look at the organic vs. chemical fertilizers debate, and more!
Also on the schedule are behind-the-scenes tours of the grounds management programs at Southern Methodist University and Dallas Arboretum.
It should be an exciting program.
