I just got back from the launch of PGMS?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? 2008 Regional Grounds Management Seminars & Site Visitation series in Dallas. A sellout success, the program attracted grounds management teams (yes, I said teams!) from facilities throughout the Lone Star State as well as a handful of other professionals from across the U.S.
The program opened up with a behind-the-scenes tour of the grounds operation at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Bordering White Rock Lake, a tour of this 66-acre facility reminded many of the attendees why they got into the grounds management profession in the first place ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) to provide our friends, neighbors and community with special areas where they can reunite with nature?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s treasures. The facility?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s specific focus on using the landscape to educate children and adults alike, allows visitors to exercise their minds as well as their bodies as they stroll through this recreational area.
The first blooms of spring were just emerging as Director of Horticulture Jim Turner gave us an insider?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s look at the arboretum?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s grounds. It was a parade of color. After all the grounds team plants nearly 2 million tulips in addition to all the other botanicals on display. With its pristine grounds and focus on education it is no wonder that this site draws more school children than any other arboretum or botanical garden facility in the country.
The education sessions that followed the next day were outstanding, focusing on sustainable practices. Anticipation had been building up in advance for one program in particular, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Managing Landscapes Designed for LEED Certification”. Dr. Don C. Wilkerson, professor at Texas A&M University?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Department of Horticultural Sciences, did not disappoint with his presentation. This unique, interactive program assisted attendees by providing guidelines to use when determining how best to develop and maintain a healthy and sustainable landscape environment at their facility.
I didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t know there were so many other professionals facing these same issues. I wish I had attended a PGMS program or gotten involved sooner.
After a full day of education programs on topics ranging from the latest trends in organic fertilizers to safely managing your tree crew, participants were treated to a visitation to the Southern Methodist University (SMU) grounds program.
SMU?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Assistant Director of Landscape-Grounds, Kevin Dilliard, CGM showed us why his campus has been recognized as a PGMS Green Star Award recipient. With several LEED buildings on campus, the SMU grounds team has kept pace by developing a Gold Level LEED building landscape. In addition to utilizing LEED plants, the grounds team has also taken a hard look at its water use. In addition to irrigating with reclaimed water from the university?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s physical plant, they are also in the process of installing an irrigation control system which will run the entire SMU campus on ET values from their own weather system.
This SMU grounds program was quite impressive as was the whole regional seminar. The PGMS Regional Grounds Management Seminars & Site Visitations series is designed specifically to meet the unique needs of institutional grounds managers. Many attendees echoed similar sentiments to other regional seminars I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve attended: ?EUR??,,????'?????<?I didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t know there were so many other professionals facing these same issues. I wish I had attended a PGMS program or gotten involved sooner.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
For those of you who have yet to undergo the PGMS experience ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) there is still hope! PGMS is investigating the logistics of offering a Regional Grounds Management Seminars & Site Visitations program in the Baltimore-Washington metro area this July in conjunction with the DC PGMS Branch Summer Field Day.
Stay tuned as we will provide updates in future issues of LSMP as well as online at www.PGMS.org.
