From city street poles to shopping centers, college campuses, sports stadiums and facilities banners are everywhere. They have many purposes as well: they have the ability to announce events, for instance the grand opening of a new store in a downtown shopping mall or can direct you to various locations, for example to a special event or concert.

This banner was hung using standard banner pole brackets around the block from the Seattle, Wash. hospital it promotes. It contains what is called a separate drop panel where the name of the hospital appears.

Choices, Choices, Choices

There are many different types of banners to choose from. Some things to consider are do you want your banner to be permanent or temporary? Banners have a life span, some longer than others based on the type of material that they are made from. Sunbrella???????(R)???? fabrics, an acrylic material that is dyed prior to weaving results in fade-resistant banners, that are warranted under normal conditions for up to three years. Banner are versatile, their life span depends on the size and application of the banner. Most are composed of reinforced vinyl, vinyl mesh, nylon or acrylic. Digital printing on a banner will last up to five years in most areas, despite unpredictable weather or use of improper cleaning techniques. Acrylic appliqu????????(C) banners will last longer, most companies will try and fit the right material and look with the goals of the project.

Designed by Maestri Design, Seattle, Wash., this shopping center generated interest despite its ongoing construction process. Banners lined the streets spelling out Santana Row comprised of 20-foot tall columns welded on an aluminum frame. The artwork was printed digitally on matte vinyl material.

Where To Buy And Store Banners

Larger commercial projects require engineering and customized attachment methods. Smaller street pole type banners are available from a variety of companies nationwide. When storing banners it is important to remember that banners rest on a vertical plane so they are not equipped to have things resting on them. They can be cleaned with a mild detergent, or soap and water but it is important that they be fully dry before being stored. Be careful not to pressure wash banners that may rest in hard to reach places for this may harm to design as well as the material. Some higher end banners may last ten years if cared for properly, however the desired message and styles often change so many banners are often discarded before they are unusable.

A shopping mall in Calif. used banners in which the flowers were hand sewn onto this Sunbrella???????(R)???? 15×3 foot fabric. The letters were applied using heat transfer, or baked onto the material.

Hanging Banners

Unexpected costs may occur due to constant maintenance of a poorly engineered bracket system and the premature replacement of improperly installed banners.

Larger projects may require installation by a professional install team that many banner companies are willing to coordinate.

Street pole banners are fairly simple to hang and hardware kits are available.

Using a standard bandit tool the bracket bases are installed on ples with stainless steel banding. The bracket arms are attached to the base and can be adjusted up to 3 inches up or down. This adjustment feature allows your installer to set the banners taut in a minimum amount of time. Most round poles will fit with a 5-inch diameter or larger, square poles with as little as 3” per side, and can be bolted to flat surfaces. When properly installed, the bracket arms will not creep or twist. The pole arm cannot fall even if the bolts are not properly tightened. The bolts must be completely removed before the arm can be separated from the base. The bracket arm also has a tie-down loop so that you can attach the banner to it, preventing the banners from blowing off and deterring theft.
