The College of Environmental Design (CED) at UC Berkeley is the first in the country to bring together the departments of Architecture, City and Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning, creating a collaborative and dynamic community of students, scholars, creative designers and planners concerned with the built environment, in all its complexity.
The college is known for teaching planning and design as disciplines that foster critical thinking, research inquiry and imaginative design proposals. This approach prepares students for creative careers in a number of fields, as well as for life-long learning. Planning and design are pursued not only as ways of exploring solutions to the critical environmental challenges facing society, but also as ways of developing an argument for a specific design approach. The college has a long tradition of examining pragmatic and empirical evidence based on quantitative analyses along with theoretical and aesthetic issues based on precedent and discourse, in developing design ideas.
