The use of reclaimed water, drainage infiltration swales and on-site drain water retention, ET-based water controllers, sustainable materials and plant selection, and a host of other tools all work together to lessen the impact of development and fit the project into the surrounding environment.

Bella Lago Model Homes, Manteca

This residential development is located in a unique location on two very large lakes in Manteca, Calif. The up-scale homes evoke a classic Mediterranean style that relies on the tradition of California outside living. Field-grown olives, grasses, rushes, and other native and native-style plants reinforce the California and Mediterranean themes. Elements of the interior design have been pulled into the landscape to blur the distinction between inside and out.

Pacific Hacienda, San Carlos

This mixed-use office and multi-family condominium project is in the downtown area of San Carlos. The architecture and landscape design has been created to fit the scale of the surrounding community. Four existing homes along the main commercial street through town were preserved and converted to offices. The exterior spaces around the building are open to the public and there is a community pathway that runs through the middle of the site with a historic courtyard that used the same stone veneer, fountain, and fencing from the previous home.

W Hotels, Newark, Calif., San Diego, San Mateo, Atlanta, Ga.

This high-design hotel chain offers guests a creative and playful experience. KLA has strived to re-invent the hotel landscape to compliment the interior design of W Hotels. The pool and exterior patios offer informal spaces that can be molded to fit the needs of the guest and specific events. Unique materials are used for common elements such as pool fencing, walls, and pool deck paving. The W San Diego offers a roof-top beach bar with sand, fire pit, and beach grass edges. The W San Mateo (Silicon Valley) is under constructions. The design offers an urban resort setting with a variety of spa and pool area uses. The main focus is the motor court of large paver blocks with grass and cobble between to evoke an informal drive and porte cochere.

Scenic Oaks Offices, Modesto

Scenic Oaks is an office complex of award-winning buildings set along the banks of Dry Creek that runs along the edge of Modesto. The site is located in a long-neglected part of town and is helping to set the stage for redevelopment of the entire area. This site blends the natural and urban environments. The creek zone consists of very large valley oaks and steep banks, while the street side runs along a busy avenue. KLA used a variety of native style plantings in zones around the building to reinforce the architecture and to blend with the surrounding native landscape.
