Chandler & Chandler specializes in high-end residential landscapes, ranches, parks, hospitality and commercial projects, primarily in the Far West. The firm is headed by Jack Chandler and his daughter, Jennifer Chandler, both licensed landscape architects. Jack and Jennifer had separate businesses in the Napa Valley before combining forces in the fall of 2006. Although Jennifer and Jack Chandler are well-versed in a variety of landscape styles, they are best known for their contemporary approach. They both emphasize touches of whimsy, often in the form of outdoor art and sculpture, and their refined planting plans.
This archly contemporary home, designed by Mexico City?EUR??,,????'???s Ricardo Logoretta (a disciple of Luis Barragan), called for an equally dramatic approach to the landscape. The Chandlers called for thinning the surrounding dense forest so there would be a more apparent sense of place and the opening up of views to the valley below. Once the forest had been edited, Jack discovered the ultimate color of the house in the bark of the many madrones on the property. The landscape is a subtle, almost musical interplay of opposites: huge stone boulders flanked by lilting stems of ornamental grass.
This venerable, 40-acre resort property in Carmel Valley was in serious need of updating when new owners invited Jack Chandler on the scene. The intent was to make Bernardus Lodge into a premier destination for California travelers, with all the amenities, including first rate accommodations, restaurant, spa and an extensive landscape intended for active recreational use.
When new owners bought this existing Mediterranean-style home in the hills above Napa Valley, the main attraction was the view. Once they settled into the house, the residents realized the rugged hillside location precluded any outdoor living. Jennifer was called in to remedy the situation. With considerable effort, amenities were added to the site: swimming pool, lounge areas, an outdoor kitchen, and an arbor-covered outdoor dining room.
