The jury for the annual American Society of Landscape Architects Professional Awards received over 500 entries this year. Thirty-seven projects will receive awards at a ceremony sponsored by Landscape Forms on October 8 at the ASLA Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
The ASLA 2007 Professional Awards fall under five categories:

Maritime Park lives up to its name, evoking South Boston's maritime industrial heritage, including teak columns (think ship masts), granite walls and cast iron-glass bullet stair treads.

A nine-acre industrial site on Seattle?EUR??,,????'???s waterfront is now green spaces and art. The landscape architecture created meadow landscapes for Olympic Sculpture Park, with expanses of grasses and wildflowers, meeting bordering sidewalks to achieve a ?EUR??,,????'??fenceless?EUR??,,????'?? park. The ?EUR??,,????'??Valley?EUR??,,????'?? consists of an evergreen forest of tall conifers (fir, cedar and hemlock) and ancient trees once native to Washington, such as the ginkgo and Dawn redwood. The ?EUR??,,????'??Grove?EUR??,,????'?? is a forest of native aspen that defines the park?EUR??,,????'???s transition from city to shore.

For the roof garden courtyard the challenge was not to exceed the 65 lbs/c.f. dead load throughout the majority of the space. In addition, the depth of the extensive planter beds could not exceed 6-8 inches, yet had to allow for layers of waterproofing and drainage and proper cultural requirements of the sedums.

The design of the Mount Tabor Middle School Rain Garden transformed the parking lot courtyard space from a gray space into a green one that manages stormwater, helps cool the school?EUR??,,????'???s adjacent classrooms, and provides a canvas for environmental education for the students, staff and community.

The lower terrace presents rectangular stone shapes, one a raised infinity edge pool, the other a terrace with recessed sitting areas with fireplaces.

Balcony grates cast shadows onto the gravel paving, creating the illusion of raked gravel. This is reminiscent of gravel patterns found in dry gardens in Japanese Zen temples. Landscape lighting and blue LED lights lend the garden a mysterious atmosphere.

Each bedroom for the L-shaped Malinalco home, southwest of Mexico City, has its own private patio. This is the orchid and stone patio. The home is heavily planted along its perimeter, with a courtyard paved at its center with long, narrow cobblestones.

The plant palate does not require chemical maintenance or any irrigation systems. A grove of paper birch (Betula utilis) frames the main entry to the driveway. A secondary gateway of river birch (Betula nigra) is located prior to the main pedestrian entry to the house. Finally, a third paper birch grove weaves through the CorTen fence.

The pool terrace is limestone, with a spa scribed by quartzite stone walls. The pool has an infinity southeast edge. The sunning bench is cantilevered ipe wood. The stone-concrete ramp is edged with equisetum, down to the dining terrace and lawn.

The cantilevered stair anchors one corner of the dining court. The 10-foot slabs of solid granite cantilever out five feet from the supporting retaining wall. The stainless steel and teak handrail ascends the stair as a virtually transparent barrier for the pool and terraces.

The full-length frosted glass panels at the north wall bordering the dining space are illuminated. The pergola is equipped with down lighting, retractable sun shading, infrared heaters and stainless steel grid panels to support vine coverage.

The plant palette for the Southern Calif. home?EUR??,,????'???s ocean terrace sports a variety of color and texture, with low water needs and able to handle wind and salt air. An east-west light line connects the raised spa to a sunken seating area with a fire table.

Hunters Point is a decommissioned military base in San Francisco on the verge of redevelopment with an emphasis on industrial uses by the city. The landscape architects were hired by an environmental nonprofit to analyze development issues and to create concept plans for a park at Hunters Point Shipyard.

Led by landscape architects, this grassroots collaborative planning engaged hundreds of multidisciplinary professionals and citizens to create long-term plans for Seattle's interconnected green infrastructure. Participants on the downtown team envisioned a return of the tidal salt marsh that sits over a shallow earthquake fault. The marsh also doubles as a water biofiltration chain.

The ranch master plan illustrates agricultural uses, waterways, roadways and building sites. Agricultural activities are consolidated to the east side of Wildhorse Creek to contain grazing operations and create opportunities for native restoration.

The Lower Howard?EUR??,,????'???s Creek Valley is at the edge of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. Palisades, waterfalls, sinkholes, and other geologic formations are dramatic evidence of erosion as a sculptor of topography. The consulting team was charged to analyze long-term plans for preservation and public access.
