2006 ASLA Professional Awards

This year the American Society of Landscape Architects?EUR??,,????'??? 2006 Professional Awards jury fielded over 500 entries. The 10-person jury, chaired by Todd Johnson, FASLA, selected 32 projects. The awards will be presented October 9 at the ASLA annual meeting in Minneapolis.

Columbus Circle, the southwest portal to New York?EUR??,,????'???s Central Park and intersection of Broadway, Eighth Ave. and 59th St., has been redesigned many times since 1905. The landscape design improvements include three new basins replacing the central fountain, custom designed Brazilian ipe wood benches, paving and lighting. The outer cobble band provides a buffer area between the planting beds and travel lanes. Honey locust trees offer light shade for the outside circle and walkways.

This contemplative garden is a simple space adjacent to the Cleveland Botanical Garden's library. Path materials are durable and textured for slip resistance and the railings are custom designed. Overlooks provide a place to view the gardens.

The cool colors of the concrete dividers, runnel edge and waterfall, zero-edge pool and collection basin are in contrast to the vibrant color of October glory maples. The plant choices are spare: sloped lawns under the existing large live oaks; English ivy at the base of walls and the maples concentrated at the interior court. The maples benefit from a sub- and surface-drainage system.

This private garden is on a 10-acre site in New England. Garden elements include a koi pond, soaking tub, ceremonial planter, water basins and outdoor shower. Woodland bulbs and groundcovers fill the cracks in the native fieldstone paving, creating a living carpet.
