There were first place co-winners in the 2005 International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) 2005 lighting awards. The annual awards recognize outdoor lighting that controls glare, uses appropriate lighting levels, is energy efficient, minimizes obtrusive light, displays a good nighttime ambiance and has minimal impact on artificial sky glow.
First prize co-winner: Pima Community College, NW Campus, Tucson, Ariz. "The use of fully shielded lighting fixtures throughout the campus makes for a low glare, comfortable nighttime environment," said the judges.
Lighting designers: Christian Monrad, Monrad Engineering; Patrick Quigley, Patrick Quiqley and Associates. Owner/manager: Pima Community College (Ernest Federico, project manager).
First prize co-winner: La Encantada Shopping Center, Tucson, Ariz. The site is just a few miles from a federally protected wilderness area. The judges praised the efficacy of the low-light level designs and the overall nighttime ambiance. The site uses mostly full-cutoff luminaries; the unshielded ones are all beneath canopies.
Lighting designers: Honorable Mention to Denise Fong, Candela Architectural Lighting; Mark D. Bentley, Dale E. Walker & Company; and Nancy Clanton, Clanton & Associates. Owner/manager: Westcor (Mitch Stallard, VP Development).
