Landscape Communications (Landscape Architect & Specifier News; Landscape Contractor National; Landscape Superintendent and Maintenance Professional; and landscapearchitect.com) had the pleasure of attending more than a dozen industry trade shows this past year, many of which we will be returning to in ?EUR??,,????'?????<?04. Attending these shows allows us to meet our readers, gain valuable insight into the industry, and make contacts with manufacturers. Here are some highlights of the shows we attended this year:
Held in January, this show attracted more than 6,500 attendees and over 650 exhibitors to the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. In 2004, the ProGreen Expo will be held January 26-30 at the Colorado Convention Center and will feature nearly 100 seminars designed to give green industry professionals the edge they need in business today.

The Feb. 4-7 show attracted 73,600-plus to the Las Vegas Convention Center. One of the draws of both events was a 2,300-sq.-ft., single-level concrete home built on the convention center's outdoor exhibit area.
The show also featured 90-plus seminars presented by industry experts on topics ranging from concrete basics and decorative techniques to rental and residential trends. World of Concrete?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s educational program attracts more than 12,000 each year. There are also many outdoor exhibits that allow hands-on tests of screeds, power trowels and saws. There is also the special Mega Demos that showcase the latest construction equipment, materials and techniques demonstrated in actual job-site conditions.
In 2004, World of Concrete will be held Feb. 17-20 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

In late February, the IECA held its annual conference and expo in Las Vegas attracting more than 1,600 attendees. Visitors from over 20 countries attended the show, which brought together a variety of environmental disciplines.
Next year the IECA has changed the name of its 35th annual conference and expo to EC04, EC is short for environmental connection. The association felt the name change was necessary to embrace the participation of other environmental organizations that may expand, and the professional knowledge, understanding and resources of those attending.

For the 24th straight year, the Long Beach Convention Center has hosted the Landscape Industry Show put on by the California Landscape Contractors Association. More than 370 exhibitors showed their wares to 6,692 attendees, according to CLCA events and trade show manager Tara Stout.
One highlight of the Landscape Industry Show each year is the booth awards that go to exhibitors who go the extra mile to make their booths creative and fun. This year, Cougar Stone; John Deere Equipment; Earthworks; and Vista Professional Outdoor Lighting all won awards, with top honors going to Rain Bird Corporation.
Stout told LASN that next year?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s show, scheduled for Feb. 18-19, will feature 60 new exhibitors and increased educational offerings. New seminars will also be conducted by the Irrigation Association and the Contractor?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s State Licensing Board.

Lightfair International 2003, held in New York city at the Javits Convention Center, posted a record number of attendees and featured the largest number of exhibiting manufacturers in the event?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s 14-year-history.
The exhibit hall featured 551 exhibitors, occupying over 1,465 booths while 19,450 walked the aisles.

The Nursery/Landscape Expo has been produced and managed by the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association for over 40 years. This year?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s show featured 1,500 exhibits and more than 9,100 attendees. The Nursery/Landscape Expo - 2003 continued the popular Parks & Patio Areas this year in Dallas, Texas. These specially designed and landscaped lounge areas demonstrate the grace and beauty of the products sold by exhibitors in highly visible settings.
The TNLA show featured a town hall meeting with members of the American Nursery and Landscape Association and a Nursery/Landscape Expo Joblink with a free listing of career opportunities for employers and employees. The Educational Lounge on the show floor provided an informal atmosphere for discussion with presenters. This is one of the largest shows in the United States with over seven acres of indoor space, and has been recognized by Tradeshow Week magazine as one of the prestigious ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Tradeshow 200.?EUR??,,????'?????<?

The Turfgrass and Landscape Expo, held at the Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., attracted nearly 5,600 attendees and 139 ehxibitors according to event manager

Held at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, in mid-October, the International Lawn, Garden & Power Equipment Exposition attracted 22,000 registrants to see the new products and special pavilions, such as OEM suppliers and snow and ice products. The National Recreation and Park Association held its 2003 Annual Congress & Expo in St. Louis this year. The event brought together a record 605 exhibitors and over 8,600 attendees who visited more than 300 educational sessions.
Delegates and exhibitors alike attended the general session keynote address by U.S. Surgeon General Vice Admiral Richard Carmona, who spoke on the importance of parks and recreation in furthering America?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s health agenda.
Bruce Hallett, president of Sports Illustrated, spoke at the Congress general session about his partnership with National Recreation and Park Association, and the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It Starts in Parks?EUR??,,????'?????<? advertising campaign aimed at increasing the public?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s awareness of the physical benefits of recreating in parks.
The 2004 Congress & Expo is scheduled for Reno/Lake Tahoe, Nevada, from October 12-16.

The ASLA held a very successful annual meeting at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans in late October, reaching its goal of 1,784 full registrations. This number reflects an increase from every past annual meeting dating back to the Boston meeting in 1999. More than 100 non-members and more than 420 students signed up for the New Orleans event.
The meeting opened with the general session on Saturday and featured speaker Steve Thomas, formerly on the television show ?EUR??,,????'?????<?This Old House.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Thomas?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? use of landscape architects throughout the years has set him apart from the many other home improvement hosts and speaks to his appreciation of the profession.
Several tours of the Crescent City were offered and eight of them sold out, including ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Plantations on Parade,?EUR??,,????'?????<? ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Strolling Through the Quarter,?EUR??,,????'?????<? and ?EUR??,,????'?????<?New Orleans Old & New Parks.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The closing general session featured incoming president Susan Jacobson, who addressed the assembly and offered her perspective on the society?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s coming year and her goals. James Carville, the featured speaker, political consultant and analyst, is a native son of Louisiana and brought his own style to the presentation, addressing many subjects that got the crowd talking at their tables.

The Green Industry Expo, sponsored by the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, the Professional Lawn Care Association of America, and the Professional Grounds Management Society, featured more then 360 indoor exhibits, 100-plus field day demonstrations, and brought in nearly 6,000 attendees.
Held Nov. 5-8 at the Cervantes Convention Center in St. Louis, the center houses 340,000 square feet of exhibit space. Attached to the center is The Edward Jones Dome, home to the St. Louis Rams.
GIE featured cash prizes for attendees, exhibitor sponsored show specials, and more than 60 educational sessions. GIE featured sessions on litigation avoidance; tax planning and selling tips. Although the meeting was not entrenched in design and planning facilities, the maintenance and contractor professionals had much opportunity for education and demonstration opportunities.
