The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

We were already working on the City of Wichita's 17th Street roadway improvement project when they drew on our additional in-house capabilities to tackle design for enhancements to the adjacent McAdams Park. We worked with the City's Parks and Recreation Department, City Council members and League 42, gaining community input and final approval for our plans from the Design Council. On this very tight timeframe, we selected and collaborated with an artist to develop unique, integrated artwork - incorporating baseball-themed design elements everywhere from the plaza space to the custom shade structures, site furnishings, lighting, and crosswalk. On top of creating an important pedestrian connection to League 42's property across the street, our team designed a highly visible gateway and new "front door" to McAdams Park.

"We took advantage of design opportunities to celebrate baseball legend Jackie Robinson, for whom League 42 is named."

* In the time since the project was submitted for publication, the statue of Jackie Robinson was stolen and subsequently found. While what remained of the statue was not salvageable, League42 is working towards replacing it with a copy.
