The University of Toronto announced May 27, 2008 a $14-million gift by John and Myrna Daniels to the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, the largest private gift to any architecture school in Canada.

The gift will fund a major physical expansion and renovation of the faculty and will also endow a scholarship fund for outstanding architecture, landscape and design students.

In recognition of the import of this contribution, the U of T will rename the Faculty the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design. The Faculty offers graduate programs of study in three interrelated disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture and urban design.

John Daniels received his bachelor of architecture degree from U of T in 1950 and went on to become one of Canada’s most important developers of residential communities.

“My education at U of T laid the foundation for a highly rewarding career and really is the basis for my success in real estate development,” said Daniels, chair and CEO of the Daniels Corp., a leader in the building industry. ?EUR??,,????'??I hope this gift will enable more students to pursue their dreams.”

“The Daniels’ remarkable benefaction will play a pivotal role in the education of the next generation of architecture leaders in Canada,” said U of T President David Naylor.

“We thank John and Myrna for their outstanding leadership and for providing U of T with an opportunity to recruit the country’s top students,” said Professor George Baird.

Nine million of the $14 million donation will go to renovating and expanding the building the school has occupied since the 1960s.

The remainder of the gift will endow the John and Myrna Daniels Scholars fund, an annual award with preference given to students who are the first in their family to attend university.
