Over the next four years, the Home Depot Foundation will spend $1 million to plant street trees and retrofit houses in parts of North Philadelphia with more energy-efficient water heaters and windows.
The city, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Asociaci??n Puertorrique????????(R)????????os en Marcha will coordinate the program.
Plans call for new trees along Berks and Norris Streets, Germantown Avenue and around neighborhood schools. Besides water heaters and windows, the retrofits may also include rain barrels, landscaping and white roofs, which deflect rather than absorb heat.
