Landscape Architects Represented on Capitol Hill

BONITA SPRINGS, FL

Stephen J. Trudnak, FASLA, Principal in Stephen J. Trudnak P.A. Landscape Architecture and Land Planning, recently attended the 1998 Congressional Small Business Summit in Washington, D.C. Trudnak was one of two Southwest Florida business leaders selected to attend the summit by Congressman Porter Goss.

More than 500 delegates from around the United States attended the summit, held from June 17-19. This first gathering of small business leaders was sponsored by the National Federation of Independent Business. During the three-day event, delegates heard from Congressional leaders; they also spent hours in break-out sessions, where they discussed single issues of importance to the small business community and created a Small Business Referendum for the Future.

The referendum covered eight issues: Health Care Legislation, Affordable Health Insurance, Lawsuits Destroying America's Ability to Produce, Relieving the Payroll Tax Burden on Small Business, A New Tax Code for A New Millennium, Regulatory Reform and Taking Away Private Property Rights. Each delegate attended two break-out sessions where they discussed and prioritized issues.

First copies of the referendum were presented to Congressional leaders at the conclusion of the final session. "It is hoped that Congress will use this information to develop its long range legislation to ease the burden on small business," Trudnak said. "We intend to follow up on a bi-annual basis."
