A Design-Build Project by GuildWorks: The U.S. Pavilion at Spokane's Riverfront Park, a 1974 World's Fair landmark, underwent a remarkable transformation after lying partially neglected for over four decades. GuildWorks, consulting for NAC Architecture, was challenged to reimagine a new shade structure for this historic icon while respecting its original design intent. Our team developed an innovative solution to attach shade elements to the existing, historic cable-net structure. Through meticulous engineering analysis, GuildWorks successfully reverse-engineered the 46-year-old cable net to support a modern fabric array spanning 6,775 square feet. Strategic fabric positioning, informed by extensive sunshade studies, creates dramatic geometric light patterns that transform the space throughout the day. Since its renewal, the Riverfront Pavilion has reclaimed its place as a city icon for Spokane, earning twelve prestigious industry awards including DBIA's 2020 Project of the Year and multiple honors from AIA, AGC, CMMA, and ENR Northwest.
