Highlands Ranch, Colo. is a planned community 18 miles south of Denver, pop. 95,000. The Highlands Ranch, Colo. Metropolitan District completed a lengthy analysis of various fence options to replace the 20-year old wood fencing along its parkways. The district's study looked at cedar, ornamental iron, polyethylene, PVC, concrete, masonry and TREX, which is made from recycled polyethylene and reclaimed wood fiber. The final selection, based on a combination of looks, life span and cost, was TREX. This environmentally-friendly composite material is known for its strength, moisture resistance and UV light protection, all pluses for surviving the tough Colorado winters. As no painting or staining is required for the new fencing, maintenance isn't much of a concern. To date, over 10 miles of the 41 miles of wooden parkway fencing has been replaced. The district is systematically replacing all the parkway fencing over the span of 20 years. The fencing is being installed by the Split Rail Fence Co. of Littleton, Colo. The use of polyethylene stone columns is being continued. They are spaced along parkways to add dimension, visual interest and to improve the overall appearance.
