Time for Ted

Ted Bechtol, the U.S. Capitol landscape architect, has the honor each year of selecting the Capitol Christmas tree.

Oregon did it in 2002; Idaho in 2003; Virginia in 2004 and New Mexico last year. This year, the state providing the Capitol Christmas tree that will decorate the west lawn of Capitol Hill that faces the Washington Monument comes from Washington state. The tree is selected by Ted Bechtol, the U.S. Capitol landscape architect, from several trees previously identified in the Olympic National Forest.

The tree will travel across the nation on a National Van Lines trailer. The decorations will include 10,000 lights and about 3,000 ornaments made by Washington state students.

Washington state will also provide the Capitol with 65 smaller trees to adorn government offices, including the Supreme Court, Department of Agriculture, Department of Interior and National Arboretum and the Senate. These smaller trees, 6-7 feet, will also be decorated with ornaments made by the Washington students.

The Capitol Christmas tree will be illuminated each night Dec. 6 through Jan. 2.
