The third annual This Old House Top 100 list, featuring the best new home products of the year, was recently released by the magazine's editors who spent months of testing before arriving at the results. The winning products were separated into seven categories including building products and outdoor living. As a sign of the times, each category also recognized most useful apps. Among the picks of interest to landscape professionals are: Edgetite Paver Edging Spikes, by Edgetite Products Inc., which have angled tips to wedge the shafts tightly against the pavers, keeping them from budging. Thermally-modified American ash Decking with JEM Joints, by Thermory, whose interlocking-end match joint lets you butt deck boards between joists, nearly eliminating the materials waste of cutting them back to the nearest support. Ornamental Wood Ties, by OZCO Building Products, hefty yet attractive hot-dip-galvanized, powder-coated steel connectors held in place by structural screws to securely join thick timbers. 3X Three-Stage Power Snow Thrower, by Cub Cadet with a corkscrew-shaped chopper in the front of the scoop that pushes snow through the chute 50 percent faster than the previous model did. HU800AWD Push Mower, by Husqvarna, the first push power mower with a drivetrain that sends power to all four wheels. 36V Lithium Sweeper/Vacuum, by Black & Decker, a cord-free blower that converts to a vacuum to mulch and deposit debris in the attached bag. 18V LXDT06Z Quick-Shift Mode 3-Speed Impact Driver, by Makita, which automatically reduces impact force and rotation speed in the final seconds of driving to help reduce the occurrence of stripped screws and split boards. DWARA100 Right-Angle Attachment, by DeWALT, the first right-angle drive attachment designed to stand up to the force of an impact driver, thanks to sturdy steel gears. Wrotter, by Sneeboer Manufacturing, a hand-weeding tool that has angled barbs, which after driving the tool into the soil alongside the stem, will catch the roots when you pull back, bringing up the entire weed. "The 2013 TOH Top 100 is full of products that showcase ingenuity, demonstrate originality, wow us with their functionality, and of course, mark breakthroughs in their categories," says This Old House editor Scott Omelianuk.
