Considering the natural growth pattern of cities, Studio One Eleven envisioned a revitalized urban environment that gradually and strategically integrated an eight-block area into downtown Long Beach, California. As an extension of their commitment to build on the potential of existing places to improve urban life, they relocated their office within the project area. Their new workspace catalyzed significant public and private reinvestment in this once-overlooked part of Downtown. Working in close partnership with multiple stakeholders, a variety of strategic, public realm enhancements, building renovations, and street infrastructure improvements were implemented. These include the redesign of Harvey Milk Park and Equality Plaza, a dramatic transformation to 3rd Street, 4th Street and North Promenade streetscapes, public parking structure improvements, adaptive re-use of existing buildings to introduce new retail and commercial activity, initiating a flexible street and pedestrian promenade, farmer's markets, bulb-outs, bike lanes and traffic calming measures along with vibrant public murals produced through collaboration with local artists. The project is an ever-evolving canvas of strategic public realm enhancement, community activation. and a continuous testing ground for new ideas.
