Texas Rain Brings New Business

According to a report on TWTX.com, landscape contractor across central Texas are being inundated with calls for landscape services after the February rains. Reportedly, homeowners are eager to revive their landscapes following a year of drought damage.

"We're getting a lot more calls of turf problems, problems with weeds, (saying) my grass is gone," said Shannon McDaniel, general manager of Fitzgerald Lawnscapers in Waco.

"They're wanting to know what can I plant that's low water, attractive, what can I do with my grass, what's a native grass and what are native plants?"

Landscape contractors can take advantage of this drought respite to educate themselves about low-water plant materials, and offer these to current and prospective clients.

Good native grass varieties that can survive on less water include buffalo and zoysia grass. Plants that can take the heat have become a hot item at Barrera's Nursery in Hewett.

"People are going to start getting drought-resistant plants like yuccas, native grasses and rocks...lots of rocks," said Ezekiel Salas, general manager of Barrera's.
