Tenn. Sports Field Fire Ant Infestation

Fire ants moved into the Chattanooga, Cleveland and Athens area several years ago and are slowly moving north, according to McMinn agriculture adviser Tim Wood. He said they are now near Knox County, and there are probably some colonies already in the area. He said it is just a matter of time before ants will cause problems in Knox County, too.

A number athletic fields in Athens, Tenn. were closed at the end of August to treat a fire ant infestation. Parks and Recreation Director Austin Fesmire said that in the course of a few days hundreds of ant hills popped up on the soccer and softball fields.

“We’ve never had them on the turf grass,” Fesmire said, but recent rains apparently made conditions perfect for the ants to appear.

The city reopened the fields on September 2nd after they were treated.
