Southern Nevada Tightens Water Belt

Desert friendly landscaping could be required of new developers and residents in the face of a looming water crisis.

With the Pahrump Valley’s mushrooming population and escalating water deficit from overdraft of the underground aquifer, water conservation has recently come to the fore in the southern Nevada community.

The county’s plan for conservation is to soft-pedal direct enforcement, but gain observance through public education and community persuasion.

In August, resident waterman Walt Kuver introduced to the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission his recommendation for conservation measures to be implemented on new constructions in the planning district. Kuver’s proposals were approved at the RPC level and were recently presented before the Nye County Board of Commissioners.

The ordinance will not affect indoor water consumption; its concern is only with outdoor use – the major source of potable water waste.
