San Francisco Botanical Garden: Fifty Acres to Travel a World of Plants

Trees in urban landscape offer many benefits to communities large and small.

Join the Landscape Expo Academy and Matthew Stephens for a live webinar about San Francisco Botanical Garden.

This presentation will give a brief overview of both GoldenGate Park and the San Francisco Botanical Gardens history. In addition, a brief overview will be given of the world class plant collection that includes plants from every corner of the planet. The presentation will highlight many species of unique plants that can be grown in the San Francisco climate that features mild winters and summers leading to a "goldilocks" growing environment for many plants. Finally, an overview of the recently completed Celebration Garden will be presented that features a grove of the tallest palm species in the world. Finally, some time will be allowed for questions from participants.

Learning Objectives
1. Participants will learn about the history of Golden GatePark and the Botanical Garden
2. Participants will learn about many of the rare and unusual plants that are grown at the Botanical Garden
3. Participants will learn about the construction process fora new 2-acre Garden

About the Speaker:
Matthew Stephens
Garden Director
San Francisco Botanical Garden and Conservatory of Flowers

Matthew Stephens is a passionate leader of public gardens, invested in improving their leadership and committed to connecting plants and people. In his current role Matthew leads the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, Botanical Garden and Japanese Tea Garden and has been in this position for five years. Over the past five years Stephens has focused on developing new resources and organizational capacity to ensure these Gardens emerge as top botanical institutions in the country. In addition, Stephens has completed a dizzying array of improvement projects along with innovative programming. Prior to leading the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, Stephens was Director ofTree Planting for New York City Parks and Recreation. He led the ambitious MillionTreesNYC campaign to plant one million trees throughout New York City and completed two years ahead of schedule. Stephens has an MS in Public Horticulture from the University of Delaware from the prestigious Longwood Graduate Program, and a BS in Horticulture fromIllinois State University.
