The Roanoke, Virginia planning commission has approved a proposed zoning ordinance prohibiting temporary signs at stores, service stations and convenience markets. The proposal will go before the city council this November. ?EUR??,,????'??Tacky?EUR??,,????'?? signage along the heavily traveled U.S. 460 east in Roanoke was cited in particular as an egregious example.

City zoning administrator, Nancy Snodgrass, told The Roanoke Times there has been an ever-increasing assortment of temporary signs from cigarette and soft drink companies marring the landscape. In addition, some of the signs sport bright lettering on black backgrounds. If the ordinance is approved, temporary signs would be permitted only if attached to buildings and permits would be required. The temporary signs would also be limited to 30 days instead of the 180 days allowed under the Virginia code.

Nobody objected to the proposed ban at the commission?EUR??,,????'???s public hearing, according to Snodgrass. Her goal is to educate the business owners in this regard and to get their compliance, not to hand out fines and bog down the courts.
