You may recall back in Jan. 2011 the news item "Football Fan Brags He Poisoned Oaks on Auburn Campus". Turns out the culprit, a University of Alabama football fan, ended up with a three-year sentence (incarcerated for at least six months) and five years of supervised probation for poisoning the 130-year-old oaks at the entrance to the Auburn campus (Toomer's Corner) with Spike 80DF herbicide.

While the university tried to rehabilitate the oaks, it's now reported they will be cut down on April 23, 2013, part of a redesign of Toomer's Corner. The new design will keep the basic configuration of the 1917 gateway. New oaks will replace the old oaks. Other additions will be seat walls and a tree-lined path into Samford Park. The university anticipates the new entrance will be ready for the of the 2014 football season.

The project is lead by Auburn's Office of Campus Planning and Space Management and consulting landscape architecture firms Nelson Byrd Woltz and jB+a. The Auburn University Board of Trustees have yet to approve the final plans for the corner.
