The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

Envisioned as a vibrant community hub in Loudoun County, VA, the 28-acre Potomac Green Neighborhood Park project emerged from an extensive concept planning phase, driven by a diverse local demographic. This eclectic mix, encompassing senior housing, varied family homes, and a new elementary school, set the stage for a park designed to cater to all ages and interests.

The park's comprehensive program includes diverse facilities: baseball and multipurpose sports fields, tennis and pickleball courts, bocce ball, horseshoe pits, an off-leash dog area, an exercise zone, and a playful children's area. Additionally, the park boasts a restroom/concession stand, pavilions, spectator shade structures, a scenic wetland trail loop with a boardwalk, and ample parking.

A key challenge was achieving a unified aesthetic across the park's extensive scope, involving numerous vendors and varying components. To address this, a meticulous material theming strategy was adopted. This included harmonizing elements like roofing, fencing, signage, pavilions, seating, and woodwork, ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing park environment.

Potomac Green Neighborhood Park stands as a testament to inclusive, well-integrated community space design, skillfully balancing diverse needs and aesthetic unity, and enriching the fabric of Loudoun County.
