COLUMBUS, Ohio-According to Dan Jones, a legislative consultant for the Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association, the state legislature still has not introduced a budget bill. The ONLA Legislative Committee has agreed to support the draft nursery license fee increase being proposed by the ONLA Board. If the fees were implemented, they would generate an additional $260,000 for the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Also, Governor Bob Taft plans to seek a new tax on landscape design services. Jones reports that in an effort to avoid accepting all of the new taxes being proposed by the governor, the General Assembly may consider imposing a temporary one-cent sales tax increase. Jones added that this is unacceptable as the industry has already negotiated contracts for the next year which do not include the would-be sales tax increase.
