"As the largest consumer of energy in the U.S. economy, the federal government can and should lead by example when it comes to creating innovative ways to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, increase energy efficiency, conserve water, reduce waste and use environmentally responsible products and technologies," President Barack Obama said in a statement.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order instructing federal agencies to take several steps to reduce their share of emissions that cause global warming. This includes ordering a 30 percent reduction in the amount of petroleum consumed by federal vehicles by 2020. This could eventually affect utility vehicles, landscape trucks and equipment.

Obama directed agencies to set greenhouse-gas-emissions reduction targets for 2020 within 90 days. The administration plans to issue guidelines for locating federal buildings in or near central business districts with close access to mass transit for workers. This is one step toward cutting by nearly a third the amount of gasoline and diesel fuel burned by the government's more than 600,000 vehicles.
