No phosphorus ban at Illinois Town

Phosphorus encourages algae growth, and excess amounts are found in many Lake County lakes, but so far Lindenhurst lakes aren’t high in phosphorus compared to the amount found in soil.

The village of Lindenhurst, outside of Chicago ruled against banning phosphorus fertilizers, and instead decided to launch a public education program about how phosphorus can harm ponds and lakes.

Following Antioch’s example earlier this year, the Village Board considered banning phosphorus fertilizers, but Police Chief Jack McKeever warned village officials that such an ordinance could not be enforced.

“Unenforceable ordinances cheapen the law, and this proposed ordinance is unenforceable. Education could accomplish the same thing,” McKeever said.

The majority of village officials agree, even though the Lake County Health Department and the Lindenhurst Lakes Commission support a ban. Trustees said they would encourage the use of lower phosphorus fertilizers through education and eventually encourage no phosphorus fertilizers, except in enclosed areas such as gardens, shrubs and container gardens.
