The National Trust has named America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. The largest entity on the list is the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS), managed by the Federal Bureau of Land Management. NLCS encompasses 26 million acres in 12 Western states, dozens of national monuments, conservation and wilderness areas, historic trails, and wild and scenic rivers. The NT says NLCS is “underfunded, understaffed and under-inventoried,” and its resources and landscapes “damage(d) from vandalism, looting, illegal off-road vehicle use, mismanaged grazing and development.”
Among the other sites on the list is Detroit’s urban core and “The Journey through Hallowed Ground,” a 175-mile-long corridor from Gettysburg, Penn. to Monticello, Va., said to have “soaked up more of the blood, sweat, and tears of American history than any other part of the country.” For the full list, visit wwwnationaltrust.org
