Montage Park

Continuing a Community Enrichment Agenda
by Brad Lents, RLA, AICP, LEED AP, Spurlock Landscape Architects; Ken Perez Sr., President, Visual Concepts Lighting

With a residential development and an office building in construction on either side, Montage Park is positioned as an oasis for the current and future residents of the master-planned, walkable community of Millenia in Chula Vista, California. The key objective for project principal Spurlock Landscape Architects was to balance nature with recreational areas. The Landscape Architects worked with Visual Concepts Lighting (VCL), who was responsible for the project's lighting concept and technical aspects, including detailed electrical plans, installation documentation, and coordination with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders during installation. The sixth project built to elevate the community's wellbeing, Montage Park features eye-catching lighting, wide pathways, vibrant shade sails, sizable areas of turf, a verdant tree grove, an extensive variety of plantings, and a link to the local urban trail system.
A vibrant color and linear, in-grade LEDs were chosen to help the park sign stand out against the green turf. Behind the sign, a grove of 26 Swan Hill Fruitless Olives (Olea europaea 'Swan Hill') is accented at night by in-grade, Bluetooth-adjustable LEDs. Also planted in the grove are Blue Foxtail Agave (Agave attenuata 'Nova') and Beach Ball Pittosporum (Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Beach Ball').
The grove features three seating areas surfaced with 4,882 square feet of 'Desert Gold' stabilized, decomposed granite. Dark Sky-approved pedestrian lights and poles were specified to make walkways safe and welcoming. The poles also mirror the architecture of nearby buildings by emulating their lines.
Glass-seeded paving forms the ribbon pattern in the walkway, denoting an urban trail system that connects all six parks within the Millenia development. These parks and their trails will ultimately form part of a city-wide greenbelt system. Six-foot-long benches with aluminum slats are placed in the center area, with De La Mina Verbena (Verbena lilacina 'De La Mina') planted between them.
Static blue catenary lights illuminate this area that features powder-coated, ADA-compliant picnic tables and waste receptacles with integrated recycle domes. The surrounding seat walls are cast-in-place concrete in a standard gray color with a sand finish surface retarder.
Catenary-mounted, Dark Sky-compliant, tealight-style luminaires with stainless steel cages are capable of outputting color temperatures of 3000K and 4000K. The poles supporting the suspension system are from Valmont.
These custom shade sails from Shade Industries are mounted on powder-coated steel posts and cover a 50-foot-by-40-foot area. To the left sit fixed, stainless-steel, four-inch-round bollards. Walkover-rated, linear, in-grade LEDs illuminate this gathering spot.
Besides the Olives in the grove, the park also has Raywood Ash (Franxinus angusifolia 'Raywood'), Japanese Zelkova (Zelkova serrata), and Chinese Evergreen Elm (Ulmus parvifolia). Some of the grasses include Blonde Ambition Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis 'Blonde Ambition'), Dwarf Cape Rush (Chondropetalum tectorum), and Deer Grass (Muhlenbergia rigens). Other specified shrubs and flowers are California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum), Pozo Blue Sage (Salvia x 'Pozo Blue'), and Berkely Sedge (Carex divulsa).
In-grade LEDs with Bluetooth connectivity provide remote control dimming and can aim 15 degrees in any direction. Those placed in decomposed granite were encased in concrete for better stabilization.

Montage Park stands as a beautiful centerpiece within the Millenia master-planned community of Otay Ranch in Chula Vista, California, which is about 10 miles south of San Diego. Covering 1.62 acres, this civic park is the sixth in a series aimed at fostering a balance between natural beauty and recreational areas to enrich the social fabric of the community. San Diego-based firm Spurlock Landscape Architects was retained to help the city bring the park to fruition.

The Fundamentals
The park design was initiated through a master planning process involving several workshops with the community and the Chula Vista's Park and Recreation Commission. The city reviewed the design plans, issued permits, and conducted inspections during construction. Meridian Development, the developer of the surrounding Millenia community, was responsible for overseeing the construction and implementation of the park that was then turned over to be managed by the city.

Lighting it Up
In collaboration with the Landscape Architects, San Diego-based lighting design firm Visual Concepts Lighting (VCL) was entrusted with the creation and execution of the lighting concept for the site. Their role included crafting a distinctive lighting theme that complements the landscape architectural vision and enhances the overall aesthetic. From the initial conceptualization, cutting-edge design principles were integrated to create a unique visual experience, tailoring the lighting elements to suit the specific needs of the environment.

VCL also handled the technical aspects of the project, including the development of detailed electrical plans and all associated installation documentation, such as precise installation details, notes, legends, and schedules. The team ensured that every aspect of the lighting installation was meticulously planned to allow for a seamless implementation of the lighting design and to guarantee that the lighting system was installed to the highest standards, both technically and aesthetically.

A Magical Transformation from Day to Night
When the sun is out, Montage Park invites visitors to explore its expansive vistas and well-maintained areas. As night falls, the park reveals a captivating allure that amplifies the community's vibrancy. The lighting design was intended to create a cohesive visual narrative that heightens the park's natural beauty and creates a safe environment for evening activities. Upon entering the park at night, visitors are welcomed by an illuminated monument sign that highlights the park's name, setting a warm and inviting tone. This thoughtful illumination serves not only a practical purpose but also sets the stage for the enchanting experience that awaits within the park.

The Enchanting Plaza
At the heart of Montage Park lies the plaza, a vibrant social hub adorned with decorative, hanging catenary lights that add a whimsical touch to the atmosphere. These lights emit a soft blue glow, instilling tranquility while ensuring visibility for visitors navigating the space. The integrated white downward lighting increases safety without overwhelming the senses, making the plaza a welcoming area for community gatherings.

Artistic Flair with Shade Sails
The illuminated shade sails are a striking example of the teamwork between VCL and Spurlock Landscape Architects. These sails serve both functional and artistic purposes, providing shelter from the sun during the day while becoming stunning focal points at night. As evening descends, the sails are illuminated from below, creating a warm, inviting glow that reinforces the park's delightful feel. Walking beneath these illuminated sails offers a distinct experience, as visitors feel embraced by the warm light. The interplay of light and shadow creates a dynamic atmosphere, transforming it into a captivating retreat where families can gather and friends can share moments.

The Copse of Trees
The park's grove of fruitless Olive (Olea europaea 'Swan Hill') trees plays a pivotal role in enhancing the nighttime ambiance and representing the history of large agricultural operations in Chula Vista and Otay Ranch through the mid-1980s. Featuring in-grade well lights, the illumination can be tailored to achieve the perfect balance of light and shadow. This flexibility allows for maximum customization, enabling visitors to enjoy a serene environment that invites them to linger. The softly illuminated trees transform the grove into a welcoming haven. Families often gather here for evening picnics, while couples find it to be a peaceful setting for intimate conversations. The gentle interplay of light among the branches adds depth to the landscape, inviting exploration and appreciation of the surrounding natural beauty.

Community Connection
Montage Park is more than just a recreational area; it serves as a vital community hub that fosters connection among residents, strengthening community bonds and elevating the overall quality of life in Otay Ranch. This sense of community is evident during events held at the plaza. Whether it's a holiday festival, a summer concert, a farmer's market, or events for the adjacent library, the park buzzes with energy. To promote walkability, an urban trail system - demarcated by a three-foot-wide ribbon pattern made with hand-seeded glass - joins all six parks in the community. Along the trail, interpretive signage offers historic facts, educational opportunities, trail mileage indicators, and wayfinding for the larger development.

Sustainability Built In
In addition to its aesthetic and functional qualities, Montage Park incorporates sustainable design elements that align with the community's commitment to environmental stewardship.

Energy-efficient LED lighting minimizes the park's carbon footprint while providing effective illumination. The use of native pollinator plants throughout the park reduces water consumption, promotes responsible landscaping practices, and creates habitats for local wildlife. This commitment to sustainability ensures that the park remains a resource for future generations.

Reviewing the Results
In summary, Montage Park is a thoughtfully designed space that transforms with the setting sun, offering a rich experience for the community. Through the collective efforts of Spurlock Landscape Architects and VCL, the park successfully blends functional lighting with artistic elements. This partnership creates a welcoming environment for relaxation, social interaction, and cultural engagement. As it continues to serve as a cherished destination for residents, the park both enhances the aesthetic landscape of Otay Ranch and enriches the lives of all who take pleasure in it.
