Landscape Contractor Mark Harris stayed cool enough to follow phone instructions for CPR, which helped him save a life in August.

Mark Harris of Livonia, Mich. (west of Detroit) is a landscape contractor and a lifesaver.

On Aug. 14, Harris, his wife, Mindy, and their son Aidan had begun to eat at a local diner. An elderly couple took seats next to them. “I noticed the lady order a milk shake before her meal,” Harris recalled. Then she collapsed.

911 Emergency

“I called 911 the second she slumped over. I knew it was bad… Her friend was slapping her cheek: ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?’ I heard him say it twice and I was on the phone with 911,” said Harris, 38, owner of Harris Landscaping of Livonia.

Gloria Myers, 73, of Farmington Hills had suffered a heart attack and wasn’t breathing.

“The 911 dispatcher was asking, ‘Does anyone know CPR?’ No one did. The 911 dispatcher said, ‘Can you start CPR?’ I laid her on the ground. She was blue. Her lips were purple. I was scared to death. At the same time, you don’t have time to think. You just do it. She tells me grab her nose, tilt her head back… Her color was coming back when the paramedics got there. They felt a weak pulse. The fireman said, ‘If she lives, you’ll be a hero,’ ” Harris said.

Lesson Learned

“I look at people differently now. When I’m in lines, I watch people. Are they OK? You never know when someone will need help,” said Harris, whose family is signing up to learn CPR and first aid skills.
