LAF and ASLA Partner to Support Green New Deal

Event Goes from August 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021

The Superstudio is an opportunity for landscape architect professionals to show support for the Green New Deal through design.

The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) has partnered with several organizations, including the America Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), to form a Superstudio that will bring industry students and professionals together to help advocate for the Green New Deal. Designers from across the country are invited to create visual representations of the proposed legislation's core goals. In this way, local and state government officials can see the support the landscaping community has for the Green New Deal.

Heather Whitlow of LAF explained the motivation behind the Superstudio in a press release. She stated, "A national climate plan like the Green New Deal will be understood by most people through the landscapes, buildings, infrastructures, and public works agenda that it inspires. The Superstudio is a concerted effort to give form and visual clarity to the scale, scope, and pace of transformation that the Green New Deal implies."

The event will also involve a collaborative network where participants will be able to interact with the different studios taking place across the country. Resources and information will be provided through lectures, roundtable discussions, and reviews. Whitlow elaborated on the importance of the dialogues being created by these events, "The concepts and dialogue produced through the Superstudio will be cataloged as part of a curated collection to form a national vision for the Green New Deal that can support policy-makers and advocates to advance Green New Deal ideas and approaches. The Superstudio projects will also inform a national conversation on policy and design at a Summit convened by the Landscape Architecture Foundation in September 2021."

ASLA president Wendy Miller commented on the association's partnership with LAF and their involvement with promoting the Green New Deal. Miller said, "Landscape architects understand that the built environment plays a significant role both in contributing to the climate crisis and its mitigation. ASLA is proud to partner with LAF in this extraordinary effort to give life to the Green New Deal's core principles and create projects that will reduce & sequester carbon, promote environmental equity & justice, and create jobs at the same time."

The Superstudio will being on August 1, 2020 and will run through the materials submission deadline set for June 30, 2021. You can find more information and register for the event here: www.lafoundation.org/superstudio
