John Hourian President of Hourian Associates Passes Away

John Hourian was inducted into the Green Industry Hall of Fame in 2020.

On January 11, John Hourian, RLA, ASLA, and longtime friend of LASN, passed away after a long illness. Hourian was the president and principle of Hourian Associates, Inc. which he founded in 1989. He began his landscape architectural journey in 1969 after he graduated from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Design, majoring in Landscape Architecture. He would then become a California licensed Landscape Architect in 1971, and went on to hold additional licenses in Arizona, Nevada, Washington, and Utah.


Hourian was also one of the three founding members of the California Landscape Architectural Student Scholarship Fund (CLASS Fund) and served as the Southern California ASLA Chapter president in 1975 and 1980. Hourian would conitue to serve the Southern California Chapter in on the executive committee in other volunteer roles. In 2020, he was inducted into the Green Industry Hall of Fame.

The family is making plans for a memorial service at the Presbyterian Church in San Juan Capistrano followed by a celebration at a separate location tentatively scheduled for March. The Chapter will notify their members and colleagues once this information becomes available. John is survived by his wife Beryl; his daughter, Nicole and husband Brett Nunn; his daughter Erika and husband Kris Spear and six grandchildren, Fletcher, Lola, Walker, Grayson, Sheldon and Shane.
