Park Officials in Cedar Rapids, Iowa have discovered the best form of scarecrows: other dead crows. Officials say that their new program (called the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?crow coffin?EUR??,,????'?????<? program) is working wonders in keeping crows away from the Greene Square Park. Officials nail dead crows onto boards and then put them high into the trees; this detracts thousands of living crows from perching there.
Greene Square Park has been a sort of crow haven in recent winter months as it gleans warmth from nearby city buildings and asphalt. Though the crows eventually move on, they leave plenty of droppings. Yet the hordes of living crows at Greene Square Park have vanished since city crews put the dead birds in place this week, Parks Director Dave Kramer said.
The crow coffin program began in 1991 when former city veterinarian Russell Anthony learned from a hunter that crows avoided a tree with a dead crow. He wired two dead crows on a board and placed it high up in the trees. The crow coffin program went on hiatus for a few years but was brought back last January by Kramer.
Though the boards are kept high up in the trees, the coffins need to be replaced often to combat odor and will be in used until spring.
