Tom Canete began seeing the profit potential of snow as a 9-year-old paperboy who offered to shovel his customers?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? walks.
More than 30 years later, as the owner of a Wayne snow removal and landscaping company, Canete still likes a good snowstorm. Like other North Jersey snow-plowing companies, he?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s been happy about the storms that have dumped more than 50 inches on parts of the region since December.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?This winter?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s been great,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Canete, 42. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?I don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t remember a year when we had three blizzards.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We average about five [snow] events a year, and this year we had about eight,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Pete Meyers, owner of Four Seasons Construction in Moonachie, who has been plowing since 1976.
The nation spends about $8 billion a year on snow removal, according to Michael Zawacki, editor of the Ohio-based Snow magazine, a trade publication for the industry. About 70 percent of snow removal contractors ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oe including Canete ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oe are landscapers.
Canete started plowing to use idle trucks and workers in the off-season. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Now it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a lucrative business,?EUR??,,????'?????<? he said.
Companies ?EUR??,,????'?????<?depend on the revenue they make in the snow season to give them enough cash to get their landscaping operations up and running in the spring,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Zawacki said. The problem is, snowfall varies wildly from winter to winter.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Let?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s put it this way,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Bill Pols, owner of Good Earth Landscape Contractors in Paramus. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve had winters where we did $5,000 [in snow removal revenues] and winters where we did $150,000 or $175,000.?EUR??,,????'?????<? This winter, he said, his snow revenues will top $100,000, making up about 15 percent to 18 percent of his yearly business.
Snow contractors face other challenges besides the unpredictable weather. Fuel is expensive, and so is road salt (now around $80 a ton, Zawacki said). And the heavy equipment has to be carefully maintained.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?The more wear and tear you put on your trucks, the greater risk they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re going to break down at the most inopportune time,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Zawacki said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?The guys in this business know Murphy?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Law.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Canete deals with that issue by having a mechanic ready to go out into the storm to do repairs if needed. He has about 30 trucks, and subcontracts with another 40 to 45 in a storm. He?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s not sure yet how much money the snowstorms brought in this winter.
Richard Goldstein of Green Meadows Landscaping in Oakland, who has sent 14 trucks out to plow in this winter?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s storms, said the snow revenues helped offset lost revenues in other parts of the business.
Landscaping in this economy has not been great,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Goldstein said. He said the landscape construction part of his business is down about 50 percent, because homeowners can do without new walkways, patios and walls. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?But if the snow falls, you?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve got to clean it up,?EUR??,,????'?????<? he said. Meyers agreed, calling plowing ?EUR??,,????'?????<?a bulletproof business.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Snow management companies have several ways of billing. Some customers pay a flat fee to cover the whole season?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s work, whether there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a lot of snow or a little. Others pay a retainer, then pay more if the work exceeds that amount. And some pay by the hour, or per inch of snow.
Pols uses a mix of these types of billing. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?You can guarantee yourself a minimum income and also have an upside potential if there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a busy winter,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Pols said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?If you have just one type, you could either hit a home run or strike out.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
One concern mentioned by both Meyers and Canete is collecting from customers who have been hurt by the economic downturn and probably didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t budget for so much snow.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?You have to know your customers. I could tell you the three customers that are slow payers,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Meyers said. But he added: ?EUR??,,????'?????<?If they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re hurting in this economy and it takes them 45 or 60 days to pay what they should pay me in 15 days, I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll give them that slack because they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re loyal to me and I know they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re good for it.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
