Housing Starts are on the Rise

Single-family housing starts in March were at a rate of 531,000; this is 0.9 percent (???????(R)???????+???????(R)??????oe???????(R)???????+???????(R)????????12.1 percent) below the revised February figure of 536,000. The March rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 88,000.


Privately-owned housing starts in March were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 626,000. This is 1.6 percent (???????(R)???????+???????(R)??????oe???????(R)???????+???????(R)????????15.2 percent) above the revised February estimate of 616,000 and is 20.2 percent (???????(R)???????+???????(R)??????oe???????(R)???????+???????(R)????????15.3 percent) above the March 2009 rate of 521,000.

From March 2009 to March 2010 the West fared the best of the regions with an overall increase of housing starts of 75 percent, of which 82.8 percent were single units. During that time the Midwest fared the poorest with an overall decrease of 15.3 percent of housing units, with an increase of 19 percent for single units. - Courtesy of Economics and Statistics Administration
