Dr. Scott Bautch of the American Chiropractic Association's Council on Occupational Health reminds that, "It is important to stretch your muscles before reaching for your gardening tools. The back, upper legs, shoulders, and wrists are all major muscle groups affected when using your green thumb. Performing simple stretches during these periods will help alleviate injuries, pain and stiffness."

Other tips from ACA to help avoid work-related injuries:

Place equipment straps over your head on the shoulder on the opposite side of your body from the device, which will help normalize your center of gravity.

Switch the side on which you are operating the equipment as often as possible.

Alternate your stance and motion frequently.

Take frequent breaks from the activity of the day.
